Barack, Michelle and I by Latasha - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
The presidential dinner guest I would choose is Barack Obama who will be accompanied by Michelle Obama. Barack was able to come from a single-parent household and become the President of the United States. He did not come from a political family but moved up the political ladder through hard work and determination. He ran on policy, hope and change. Both these individuals have accomplished high achievements in their education, career, and advocacy.
Although I respect and admire Obama for his character and position on issues, it is Michelle who I would be most interested in meeting and learning from. She overcame economic, racial, political and social hardships and has become a very powerful voice for girls’ education, women’s reproductive rights, human rights, etc.
She is personable, knowledgeable, respectful, and confident. Michelle has created a space for herself that includes the least talked about. She has started programs that encourage the education of girls and healthy lifestyles. Her Let’s Move campaign was put in place to curb the rise of obesity in American children. Her work with Public Allies before being in the public eye shows her commitment to a more inclusive world.
After eight years of harsh criticism, racial slurs, unfair judgments and unnecessary stress, she has come out on the other side stronger, more resilient and more powerful. She is a woman who encompasses all the qualities I find important in role models, making her the perfect dinner guest to accompany Barack and I.
