The Steps of Deciding by Larissa - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
After doing some research, I understood that some college professors (especially at 2 year colleges) actually teach up to 5 courses. So in all honesty, rather than picking a certain class to teach, I would direct myself towards the kind of degree, major, or minor, I would like to teach college students. I personally would prefer to teach education sorts of things. After all, I do want to major in Elementary Education. At a college I recently toured, they had a building dedicated specifically to education. The college had language arts, mathematics, social studies and other basic courses, as well as some more directly related courses to the major, such as “Reading and Responding to Children’s Literature”. I think I’d enjoy teaching classes like these. Not only do you teach students about the subject, but as you go on, you seem to grow differently and see your very own strengths and weakness in teaching them. You discover new methods and learn more about yourself.
If I was asked to teach just a singular class, I would probably enjoy teaching language arts. The skills taught through language arts classes are carried with someone throughout their whole life. I would love to read other’s writing and watch as their stories change between each assignment and its requirements. Reading and writing has always been something I enjoyed to do, and as mentioned before, teaching others will help me grow and improve my skills as well. Although, before I put the thought of being a college professor in my mind and teaching at college levels, I have to make sure I earn my Ph.D degree!
