Giving back to my community is very close to my heart and has been a goal of mine for many years. I have chosen to pursue a career in clinical psychology, with this specific goal being a guide. This decision comes from both personal experiences and a deep acknowledgment of the unique challenges Black individuals face when seeking mental health support. Through my education, specifically at an HBCU, I aim to provide proficient care that not only helps support individuals but also uplifts my community as a whole.

Growing up, I have observed a negative stigma around mental health in Black spaces. The phrase “you have nothing to be depressed about” was often a response to emotional struggle. Therapy was also seen as a last resort or a waste of funds. These cultural barriers, systematic disadvantages, and lack of mental health representation have created a cycle of unmet needs within my community. As a future clinical psychologist, I want to help play a firsthand role in breaking this cycle and normalizing mental health care. A commitment to this mission has formed my academic journey. I have pursued coursework in general psychology, human development and maturation, and biology to help deepen my understanding of mental health. I have also volunteered with many different groups, been placed into leadership roles, and maintained high academic standing while in the process. These experiences have helped reinforce and advance my goal.

This scholarship would be an immense resource in helping me achieve these goals. It would not only alleviate financial barriers, allowing me to focus more on my studies and community engagement but also bring me closer to fulfilling my dream of becoming a clinical psychologist who will make a difference in the lives of others. The Black community deserves a mental health care professional who understands the struggles and is passionate about the work. I want to contribute to a world where mental health is no longer swept under the rug but a priority. Thank you for considering my application and supporting my journey to make this vision a reality.
