“Human Decency”

Imagine a world in chaos. Global warming, drug wars, human trafficking, and a plethora of heart wrenching circumstances run rampant across the earth. Amidst a blur of political correctness, racial slurs, bigotry, and self-proclaimed righteousness there is a massive lack of understanding and decency. If I were a college professor I would create the course, “human decency 1010” to explore human patterns over the course of humanity and how we can improve.
To begin the course would cover the issues we face today. Despite living in a world of advanced technology and scientific breakthroughs, we still struggle with the natural human. We struggle with pettiness, jealousy, and insecurities galore. On a larger scale we struggle with making informed decisions. We are becoming a race of robots who run off instant gratification. How can we continue to create if we are holding ourselves back? This is one question I would pose for my class.
Over the course of the semester we would cover several topics: human trafficking, political corruption, and environmental issues. We will study these topics in light of current and past situations. We will compare pre-industrial age slavery vs. modern day human trafficking; politics of our country past and present; and we will study our impact on the environment over time. This will lead to students having open minds, a drive to create positive change, and be prepared to face challenges after college graduation.
“Human Decency” will truly be a course of discovering human patterns over time. Combining elements of history, psychology, and behavioral sciences this course will help to create a better world. I am very passionate about this topic because my major is behavioral science. By learning from the mistakes of the past we can unite to create a stronger future.
