Fueled by Purpose A Persistent Pursuit Towards Fulfilling Academic and Personal Goals by Lamont - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Lamont Black, an aspiring Computer Engineering student who has been offered admission to the Rochester Institute of Technology. My decision to pursue Computer Engineering is driven by a complex amalgamation of elements. But if I were to single out one thing that primarily motivates me to chase my academic goals, it would be the profound fear of not realizing my ambitions. This fear or rather, this constructive apprehension - instigates a headstrong drive within me—an unyielding determination to become the person I invariably aim to be.

My interest in computer engineering commenced early. From my first touch typing class in second grade to assembling my first rig during high school, the evolution of technology has captivated me. As I ventured deeper into the realm of encoding and computing, a feeling of amazement began to pervade me, gradually morphing into a profound respect for this innovative field. The journey of a command, from human hands into the digital world, fascinated me. Every problem that arose was a challenge, a puzzle to be solved, and solving it brought me intense satisfaction. Engrossed and invigorated, I knew I had found my calling.

Though the path I've taken till now has been laden with complexities, my GPA of 3.4 stands as a testament to my resilience. It exemplifies my consistency in maintaining my studies while tackling the challenges inherent to my fervor for technology. However, it is not by constant remembrance of my grades nor the fear of dreaded low marks that I remain focused. Instead, I stay resolute by continuously reminding myself of the person I yearn to be. This persistent aspiration for personal growth fuels my scholarly endeavors, invigorating me to tackle whatever hurdle comes my way.

Being an African American in a famously underrepresented field, I’m inherently motivated – not just for myself, but for my community. My desire to be a leading name in Computer Engineering is interwoven with my ambition to pave the way for those who look like me. In providing a successful figure for my community, I am aware that I can incite younger, inspired minds to consider a field they may have dismissed otherwise.

Beyond the rigorous coursework and demanding academic environment, it’s the undeniable thrill of achievement and the prospect of using my future degree to make a significant impact in society that propels me forward. My passion for technology and my community intertwine to form an unbreakable bond of motivation and a concrete foundation from where my resilience flourishes.

To sum up, the fear of not fulfilling my long-cherished dreams is, paradoxically, my greatest motivation. It directs me towards assiduous preparation, persistent motivation, and consistent performance, all aimed at one sole purpose: becoming a successful Computer Engineer. With notable awareness, wide-eyed aspirations, and unwavering dedication, I seek to press forward, cherish my failures, relish my victories, and above all, embrace my journey of self-discovery and growth at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

This scholarship aids in this steadfast journey, making my ambitions more accessible and my dreams more potential. With hope and the guidance of the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest, I will strive to augment my skills, employ them for greater good, and most importantly, never lose sight of the person 'Lamont Black' is working tirelessly to become.
