Overcoming Discrimination: A Catalyst for Growth and Resilience by Lailyn - July 2023 Scholarship Essay

Education is often seen as a journey of growth and triumph, but it is also marked by challenges and setbacks. One particular experience stands out as my biggest failure: the racial and academic discrimination I faced from an Advanced Placement, AP, teacher, who doubted my capabilities based solely on my race and grade, deeming me unfit for the challenges of an AP class during my freshman year. This incident not only impacted my academic performance, but also had a profound effect on my personal growth, resilience, and determination to overcome adversity.

It was a moment that completely undermined my self-assurance. I eagerly aspired to challenge myself and excel in rigorous academic pursuits. However, being denied the opportunity to excel from the moment I entered the classroom, I noticed a stark difference in treatment compared to my peers. It became evident that my teacher held prejudiced beliefs and viewed me as incapable and unworthy of participating in such a rigorous course because of her perception of my academic abilities. Throughout the year, I faced constant scrutiny and biased treatment. Assignments were disproportionately challenging for me compared to my classmates, and my work was often graded more harshly, reflecting teachers’ biased expectations. The experience left me feeling demoralized, questioning my own abilities and doubting my worth as a student. The discriminatory treatment I endured not only affected my sense of belonging in the classroom, but also resulted in receiving a mediocre grade that did not reflect my true abilities. Despite my hard work, dedication, and consistent efforts to meet the high standards set by the course, I was unjustly denied the recognition and the grade I rightfully deserved. This unjust grading not only undermined my academic achievements, but also reinforced the damaging stereotype that African American students are inherently less capable, perpetuating a cycle of inequality within the education system.

In hindsight, this failure shaped me into a resilient and determined individual. It has taught me the importance of self-advocacy, the power of perseverance, and the necessity of fighting systemic injustices. Therefore, instead of allowing such discrimination to define me, I chose to rise above it. I embarked on a personal journey of self-improvement and academic growth. Countless hours were devoted to independent studies, delving into advanced materials beyond the standard curriculum. Additional resources were sought, and engagement in online courses and forums expanded my knowledge and sharpened my skills. In the face of adversity, resilience was discovered. I refused to let the discriminatory actions of one individual sway my potential. Instead, I embraced my identity as a young scholar of African descent and used it as a catalyst to fuel my determination to succeed. It became clear that my worth was not determined by the misguided prejudices of others but rather by my own grit, intelligence, and dedication. The experience taught me invaluable lessons, deepening my understanding of the persistence required to navigate a world that sometimes undermines the capabilities of individuals based on their race.
