From Disabled to College by Lacey - May 2014 Scholarship Essay

“Your daughter has a learning disability.” Those are the words my mother heard my teacher speak during my third grade year. Parents do not want to ever hear those words. After several tests being ran, the staff learned I was not learning disabled. In fact, I was working at a sixth grade level!

This is wonderful educational advice I have gotten. The reason is because it made me work harder on everything that I do. When my third grade teacher told me I was learning disabled I was heartbroken. She even went so far to tell me that I would not amount to anything, and that I would never graduate high school. At 21 years old, I am a junior in college.

The people who examined me recorded that I was working at a level higher than I should be. To this day my teacher never has apologized to me. I would love to tell her I am in college, and that her assumption has helped me further my education. A teacher should never tell a child they will not amount to anything.

In conclusion, the best education advice I received was very strange. However, it holds a personal reason. During the fourth grade, there was not a teacher that wanted me in their class because of the accusation. I am honored to be a successful college student!
