Serving the Community of the Disabled by Kyra - April 2023 Scholarship Essay

The fictional idea that one person would have unlimited time and money is a hard idea to conceptualize. Since this has never happened we must examine what it looks like in our world today. My father, though the most diligent worker I know, has the blessing of money of his job, however he does not always have the blessing of time. What is the value of money if you do not have the means of time? How will you use your money for good if you have no time to do so? Therefore, if I had both money and time, I would use my time (my services) and my money to better our community today.
In college I plan to pursue Communication Sciences and Disorders and someday become a Speech Language Pathologist. I learned about this career in my highschool years of American Sign Language class. In this class we do not only learn about American Sign Language, but we learn about the deaf community and the history of the deaf. Through this class, it has opened my eyes to see all the obstacles that people who are deaf and have disabilities have to push through every day. Not until recently have people with disabilities been seen and heard through our legislators and our community through the American with Disabilities Act.
If, in this situation I have unlimited time and money, I would fight for the rights and freedoms of the disabled community. Until you have been educated on the life of people with disabilities, you do not realize that this community does not have fair equipment, education, job security, and representation. I think it is important for people all around the world to invest their time, services, and money into the disabled community who can not always fight for themselves.
