The Evolution of My Major by Kyra - March 2023 Scholarship Essay
One person that has had a positive impact on my education would be my 8th-grade teacher, Mrs. Eddingfield. She was the one who introduced me to genetics, as well as the one who piqued my interest in the subject. In fact, that summer I sent her an email (something I had only done maybe five times before in the past) asking for more information about genetics as it was something I had never heard about before, but all attempts to learn were far above my comprehension level. The next day she sent me a veritable goldmine of information; genetics, evolution, DNA and RNA, all of it. Without Mrs. Eddingfield I likely would've majored in something completely different. In fact, I had thought about going into graphic design, but it paled in comparison to genetics and the possibilities the field held.
Sadly, my school's closest class to genetics was biology, which barely touched on the topic, so when Biotech I and II were introduced to my school's curriculum, I was one of the first people to sign up for it. I also signed up for as many biotech-related clubs as I could and attempted to find the best schools for genetics. Unfortunately, most schools only offer, at best, a concentration in genetics -- at least until graduate school, something I planned to attend.
