Fun For Future by Kyoka - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

If I had the authority to make change in my school in a positive way, I would make my high school further prepare us for the future while encouraging us to also enjoy our high school years. Not only should we be aided more with college preparation, but we shouldn’t be weighed down by academics. I would like to believe that school isn’t only for the education, but also the people and the experience.

As a senior in high school, I am rushing to explore possibilities for careers— how I will live the rest of my life. I keep thinking back to how much I wish I explored my skills and hobbies more in the past few years. I want to tell my past self to not only prioritize my grades, but also prioritize my high school life and involvement with other students.

In order to make a positive change to help myself in the past, or students moving forward into high school, I would provide small organized studying groups based on current interests or future plans. These groups will be created and maintained from freshman to senior here. In these groups students will get to know the other members and practice helpful skills together. They will work together throughout high school and encourage or work together to prepare for the future. As the group nears junior year, they will work on SAT prep or scholarships.

Although it’s unavoidably out of many student’s comfort zone to present and introduce themselves to a group of peers, I, someone who isn’t very social, learned from several classes that I grew more comfortable and was able to interact with my classmates after doing many exercises and activities to get to know my classmates. With carefully selected groups, students could potentially get to know other peers and form connections. In this group they could practice important skills for the future such as presenting, teamwork, organization, communication, and more.

This small change can make in incredibly large impact on many student’s lives during high school and for the future.
