How Miss Coyle Impacted My Education by Kylie - June 2019 Scholarship Essay

Ms. Coyle's first year of AP Literature and Composition was my senior year at Cimarron-Memorial High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. From the moment we walked into her classroom at 7 a.m., Coyle was full of energy and was eager to impart her vast knowledge onto us. However, she could tell that none of us were prepared for her course from our previous years of English courses, so she took it upon herself to start with the basics and build on them in a way that was easy for us to comprehend. Miss Coyle's ability to adapt to our inadequate learning style and create a learning environment that best suited the class greatly impacted how I spent my last year of English in high school. Miss Coyle's biggest challenge came at the end of the year when there was a discrepancy in the number of AP exams that were ordered. About a dozen kids were selected over the course of a couple days to talk to a counselor about whether or not they felt prepared enough to take the exam or wanted to opt out of it. Miss Coyle was open with all of her classes about how degrading the counselor's actions were; she made it a priority to comfort the children that were called out and let them know that it was the office's fault for not ordering the tests and that she knew that every one of her students had the ability to pass the AP exam. It was this obstacle in Ms. Coyle's first year of AP teaching that showed how much she cared not only about doing her job well, but how much she wanted her students to achieve greatness that greatly impacted how I see the world. She taught me that no matter what life throws at you, as long as you know that you did the best you could in any situation, it will never matter what anyone else thinks.
