Learning What You're Expected to Know by Kylie - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I was a college professor I would teach a class on basic life communications. When you think about it, we from kindergarten to high school we are never really taught how to communicate, we are just expected to know all of life's social graces. I would want to teach a class that focused on how to actually be a good listener, how to show empathy, and how to love people who you disagree with or are different from.
Through all of our years in schooling, we are never really taught how to listen to someone. I believe this would solve a lot of conflict between significant others as well as people with opposing views. Many people don't know how to deal with conflict and I think teaching young people how to deal with disagreement would lead to a more peaceful environment.
If I got the opportunity to tach my students how to show empathy I believe they would be much more equipped for the real world post-college. If everyone had more empathy we would all be more compassionate, and much faster to think of others before ourselves. This would lead to generosity in the areas of fiance and time and would help make the world overall a better place- in my opinion.
I want to teach this class of basic life skills to properly teach students how to act respectfully in the world. Ideally, I would love for this class to be taught from the time students enroll in school as kindergartners, but if nothing else its better to at least learn eventually in order to help make the world a better place.
