How would you make the most of a gap year? by Kylene - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

What I am about to say is probably very common for anyone else to use. Travel. Let me tell you, I have travelled during my one semester gap and it was easily one of best decision I have ever made. I have learned so much more than I did in the classroom. I get to experience much different thing hand on instead of learning and see it through pictures. I went to South East Asia and one thing I have learned is to appreciate what you have. They didn’t have proper clothes to wear while wedeling; they wore flip-flop and sunglasses. Makes me think that they don’t let poverty stop them from living life. They took risks to continue build things for other people’s necessaries that amaze me. The willingness other people do in other countries with not so-much- of- money still puts a smile on their face everyday while American on other hand always want something more everyday. After traveling I have decided to not take things for granted and try to help other people as much as possible especially with my white privilege. I have also volunteer for few non-profit organizations to give back to the community during my gap semester. I have learned to appreciate little things more, thanks to traveling and first hand on experience.
