#betterlife by Kylee - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

I have chosen this as my hashtag about why education is important to me because of a couple of reasons. Not only will a college education give me a chance at having a better life, but also to provide a better life for my parents, my brother, and other relatives. Getting a college education puts you in a better position in our society today in terms of being qualified for jobs that provide a good salary, benefits, insurance and retirement plan.
In our society today, a big part of your outcome on a job interview is the comparison of how qualified you are compared to the other applicants. By getting a college degree, you are showing the employer you are qualified and that you took the time and effort to get that degree. This alone sets you up in the real world to have many more opportunities compared to what you would have if you only have your GED. By getting more opportunities in the world to get a job, I am setting myself up to have a better life. By getting my college degree I am also putting myself in a position to give my family a better life. My parents are not wealthy, but throughout my entire life they have provided me with everything I have ever wanted and some. I want to pay that back to them by being able to help pay off our house and make sure that they do not have to worry about working until they die in order to pay all of the bills. I want to be able to step in for my family and carry the load on my shoulders and show them how thankful I am for everything that they have done for me throughout the years. That is the biggest reason that education is important to me. The weight that a degree carries in the world and in job interviews can help pull you in the right direction to get that job, that internship, and give you a chance at a #betterlife.
Education is so much more than a piece of paper that says: “You did it”. It is the ability to have grit and determination for something bigger. My ‘something bigger’ is to be able to step in as the breadwinner for my family. There are times that things are tough, that I don’t want to go to class but I remember the bigger picture. That piece of paper means that I persevered, that I have the grit to get through this, and that I have a bigger picture in mind. Education is the split in the road. You can choose to go down the path of giving up and working minimum wage all your life, or you can choose to take the path that requires time, effort and sacrifice in order to have a big pay out in the end. I value education because I want to provide a #betterlife for not only myself, but for my entire family, and to set an example for my kids in the future.
