This is My Life by Kyle - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

We go to class to expand and gain academic knowledge that will hopefully be useful to us in our futures.  However my most valuable lesson that I’ve taken away from a class is not from a history, math, science, or academic lessons, but rather about people, self-worth, realizing my potential, and most importantly to never take no as an answer.
Throughout school I had to deal with abundance of negativity from teachers and peers.  Always telling me I can’t do that or I don’t have what it takes to be successful in life.  It really got to me because I knew in my heart I’m a special human being that one day I’ll change people’s lives for the better.  However, learning to cope and slowly but surely block out the negative forces in my life helped me become a better person today.
In contrast, thanks to a handful of teachers that believe in me, I’ve been able to get through some very tough obstacles throughout school.  I’ll never forget my sophomore year history teacher, Mr. Garcia.  This teacher saw my struggles and one day confronted me after class.  We talked about all my troubles, then he said something that will stick with me for a lifetime.  “If you got a dream? You got to protect it.  If you really want something go out and get it.  Don’t let anyone not even me tell you that you can’t accomplish any of your goals.  It’s your life, do what makes you happy no matter how crazy it may sound to others.”  From this point on, I knew that I’m in control of my destiny no matter what people say to me.
In addition I’m going to continue to face great challenges throughout my lifetime, get knocked down, but I will rise back up and continue to push forward when others have given up.  These obstacles will only strengthen me, build up my character, and lead me much closer to victory.  Thanks to a handful of teachers that believe in me, I’ve learned to never take no for an answer.  This is my life, my dream, and I’ll continue to persevere to reach my ultimate goal.
