High School Advice by Kyle - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
You look nervous, and I don’t blame you. You are about to start the next chapter of your life. Mommy and Daddy won’t be by your side anymore, holding your hand helping you get through every challenge. You will be meeting new people that will tell you exactly what they think about you. The future is on your shoulders. Every test you take, every decision made in and out of the school is tracked and can hurt you in the future if you are not careful. Walking in at age 14 and out at 18 is a big difference. It will change a kid into an adult. Your interest will change throughout high school. Might not even recognize a friend going in when going out. So how do you overcome this. How can you go to this new building for the next four years and become this adult figure? How do all the distractions get blocked out? The secret is four words, “Stay true to yourself.”
Staying true to yourself will get you, not only through high school, but in life as well. Everything is changing around you including yourself. Their will be gut wrenching moments in high school as well as warm times. As you go through the years you will stumble and fail but nothing can change who you are. When dealing with teachers, other students, family, coaches, etc, as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror each night and recognize that face and decisions that figure in the mirror made each day, the future is bright. The moment the face is blurry, something has to change. Whether it’s how you treat others, how you do you work, or whatever it is, you need to go back to yourself. High school is supposed to be a great time with amazing memories attached to it. It is up to you to stay true to yourself and make that happen.
