The Great Barrier Bleach by Kyle - July 2017 Scholarship Essay
Ted Talks are known for being presentations of extremely important topics given by some of the world’s most knowledgeable men and women. My favorite academic topic is marine biology so this would be my scholarly focus. I have always had an interest in sea life and the amazing interaction in the reef ecosystem.
As I have my chance to make my impression on some of the world’s smartest, I would bring the Great Barrier Reef to the forefront. I must first present the audience with the issue. The reef is bleaching due to inclement water conditions and resulting in stress put on the coral. While some coral can survive bleaching, most coral dies and the some that does survive is more likely to die due to being over stressed. The traumatic result is that entire reefs are dying and left in shambles.
Next, I would address what will happen if nothing changes for the coral. The Great Barrier Reef is bleaching and slowly dying as we speak. Coral is actually an animal, not a plant, which makes it all that more delicate. If the coral dies most fish will lose their livelihood and die off, causing an imbalance in the ocean. We need to intervene in the problem we have caused before some of the most beautiful landscapes (or seascapes) are lost and turned to barren desserts.
As the last part of my presentation I would include an interactive segment. Now that the problem has been addressed, we must discover a way to fix it. Here I would host a vocal brainstorming session where the worlds smartest minds could be put together to come up with solutions. What can we do to save this work of mother nature before human indifference lets it slip away?
