The Impacts of my chosen major by Kyla - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

As an African American female, I am acutely aware of the significant underrepresentation of Black and female accountants. With less than 9% of African Americans currently in the field and a mere 1% holding CPA certifications, these statistics fuel my commitment to making a meaningful impact. I am enthusiastic about contributing to the efforts aimed at increasing the number of Black accountants and CPAs.
The lack of mentors who share my background is a reality I confronted when seeking guidance in the accounting space. Despite earnest efforts to find a mentor within my local community, I faced difficulties in finding someone who looked like me. In fact, my search proved to be unsuccessful. This challenge has inspired a deep-seated desire within me to become the mentor that I wish I had encountered earlier. I aspire to be the guiding figure for young individuals venturing into the accounting profession, thus bridging the gap of representation and fostering diversity in the field. I firmly believe that diversity of thought is not just beneficial but instrumental to the progress of our society.
In addition to addressing the diversity gap, accountants play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and transparency of financial information. By maintaining meticulous records and producing clear financial statements, accountants contribute to the foundation of accountability for businesses, organizations, and government entities. This transparency is paramount for building trust among employees, investors, and the public. In today's technologically advanced society, the need for accuracy and transparency is heightened, and accountants are at the forefront of meeting these demands.
In conclusion, my chosen major in accounting goes beyond personal and professional aspirations. It is a commitment to making a difference by increasing diversity in the accounting profession and serving as a mentor for those who follow a similar path. Furthermore, I recognize the critical role that accountants play in upholding financial accuracy and transparency, which is essential for fostering trust in an increasingly interconnected and technologically driven society.
