Keep an Open-mind by Kyla - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

For the incoming freshman my advice to them will help in many aspects of high school "society". They need to know the importance of being as open-minded as possible in their next four years they will be spending with classmates. The reasoning behind being as open-minded towards not only peers and fellow students, but the activities they involve themselves in because it will open greater opportunity windows. Learn to branch out to different groups; which some of them you might not have much in common with and that can be a great thing. Expose yourself to the different types of people because it will make life much more entertaining. Mix it up and sit with different people for lunch each day. The relationships built in high school can last a life time, so make your time here count.
A great thing to be thinking about is how does one get exposed to new friends? Join activities, whether it is a sport, club, and even some sort of council. Join a variety of them and do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. That is the best way to meet peers and find out new interests. High school is a place to learn and it is okay to not know who you are yet, but take risks to help find out what you like and where you belong. Take it from someone who's already lived it, high school goes fast and opportunities not taken are opportunities missed.
