Crafts Impact: 4 Years and Counting by Kyah - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

I am currently a senior at Cosby High School and for four years I have taken Crafts 3D. The name was unusual when I first examined the elective freshman year. I wanted an elective that incorporated drawing and painting, but no realistic sketching. Art Beginners would have been a logical choice if sketching was not involved. My eyes scanned down the paper hoping there was something that appealed me. Then, Crafts appeared with the explanation of 3D modeling beside the heading. It seemed unusual, but a freshman with little to loose, I went for the elective. Not having a clue that, that classroom would have an impact on my high school and life education.
Crafts impacted and expanded my education in art itself. I have learned a variety of information I was blinded to before. For example, everyone knows the famous Frankenstein and the different movies that resembled the story of a man who was made up of other body parts. Little did I know, Frankenstein was originally written by a 19 year old woman and Frankenstein ,himself ,is considered a exquisite corpse. I never paid attention, until Crafts, that some famous movies today still use the exquisite corpse idea. My education about reassembled body parts has lead me to create my own corpse stuffed animal. It broaden my way of thinking and helped me not to be closed minded. Also, while attending Crafts sophomore year, we had projects dealing with glass. Now, I first thought colored glass was easy to make and all glassblowers used dye to get the color. Clear glass blowing is hard itself since there’s the process of compacting sand together and melting it down. However, the color used in glass comes from different metals. I know for my future education, whenever I want my house to have blue or red stained glass, that it’ll be much more expensive than the regular transparent glass.
The elective is still impacting my education senior year. Since, I am in Honors-Independent Study I am able to make any projects that I desire for the school year. With my first unit on clay, I am making a rosary with an native american spin on it. My teacher then taught us how to pour clay mold. After the demonstration and the waiting of the clay to harden, she showed us a hollow ceramic lamb. It was professionally made and used the same exact technique I had just learned. My education grew on ceramics and the process in which it was done in. When I buy a ceramic brown bear, I know exactly how it was made and I even can make my own to save money.
