The Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media by Kristianne Coleen - March 2022 Scholarship Essay
Social media has affected me more negatively than positively when it came to my studies. By definition, social media would mean the likes of Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc. which I only had an account for the first two. I do recognize, however, that it has provided many other people with benefits than it can provide me, showing that it is a matter of preference and one's study habits.
For me specifically, all it could give me were constant distractions and excuses to procrastinate and slack off when it came to my studies. Throughout the years I had social media, the years I was the most active on my accounts were the same years I faced academic struggles. Social media does not often fill your feed with recommendations that have anything to do with ways to improve study habits and give students tips on their education. Instead, your recommendations are anything but relating to ways to enhance your learning. Everything is unnecessary drama, plain distracting, or ongoing social media issues such as body issues.
Nevertheless, tips with learning do exist in social media, but because of the way explorer and recommendation pages are formed, they are hard to find and one must put in some time and effort to look for it. If YouTube, a platform that is usually helpful for things like this but can be destructive in some occasions, is considered a social media, then it is the only social media that is helpful as it is easy to look for videos when one needs help in improving their study skills and habits. This being said, since in this day and age, access to the internet is guaranteed, so no matter your socioeconomic status, as long as you can find access to the internet and a device, you are set with finding resources to better yourself in your studies, learning, and education.
