Why Public Speaking Should be Required in Schools by Krislinn - January 2023 Scholarship Essay
Why Public Speaking Should be Required in Schools
I think that public speaking and talking to others is very important, especially if having a job requires you to talk to a group of people. Talking to groups of people can be tough because people have anxiety and sometimes others will judge you. As a current drama student, I feel that it’s important to be able to speak publicly because it will help prepare you for the real world and when you can talk to groups of people, talking to one person is a piece of cake. Schools should make public speaking required so students can develop skills they’ll need later on in life, learn them early on, and learn them fast.
I think that schools should make public speaking required because not only can it make it easier to talk to people, it will give you a chance to make your voice heard. Going to public schools and talking about important topics, such as drinking and driving, or doing drugs can help make a difference in the community. Being able to publicly speak helps others be heard and give them the platform to be able to. If you can't speak in public, it’s gonna be hard to make it out in the real world. Let’s say you want a job and you have to go in for an interview, you’re gonna need to know how to speak to people, especially a manager. Or if you work at school as a teacher, a company, or whatever job it may be, you have to talk to people. Starting young and early in school, will help people develop those skill sets early on, so when it comes to getting a job, they’ll be mastered at it. Trying to learn something new is hard, especially if you haven't been taught any of the skills before.
Public speaking can help with being a leader and getting higher up at your job. If schools teach public speaking, it will give the students an advantage of having a management or president position to the schools who only offer it as an elective. It will give you so many more opportunities and can help you grow not only as a person, but as a leader. Public speaking also has many personal benefits. One of the many personal benefits is boosting your confidence. You will get confidence the more you speak publicly because you’ll get rewarded and your ideas will be well-received by your audience or your boss. You will also get personal satisfaction from speaking because you’ll accomplish something scary that not everybody can do. Public speaking also helps improve communication skills, increase your critical thinking skills, and become a better listener. The only way people will actually become good at public speaking though, starts with requiring it at schools. It is so beneficial for the students and how successful they become.
