The Challenge of Learning About Myself Through My Education by Kourtney - May 2021 Scholarship Essay
I often reflect on my desire for education. Throughout my academic career, I have been exposed to many different educational programs that have allowed me to become aware of using my teaching for the greater good. These programs range from the International Baccalaureate Program to the simple mentorship of younger students. All in all, these programs have exposed me to one primary truth: I desire a higher education because it allows me to learn more about myself. Through education, I have learned that I am a firm believer in "What you put into this world is what you will get out of it." The effort and patience I have put into my studies have allowed me to learn more about my likes and dislikes, gain a more profound knowledge of African history, foster a connection with my African ancestors, and learn how to use my studies to respond to challenging situations. The certainty that I can learn more profoundly about myself through my education motivates me to continue in such a demanding course load. My desire to learn more about myself through education leads me to pursue a career as a medical anthropologist. I naturally gravitated and excelled in STEM-related courses in high school but took a significant interest in international societies and communities. As a Medical Anthropologist, I will be able to use these naturally honed skills. I will also have the opportunity to flourish in one of the most challenging careers in today's times. One of my long-term goals is to complete college to become a Medical Anthropologist. Still, I would not have been made aware of this dream without learning more about myself and what I can handle educationally due to my academic career.
To attend the college of my choice, I require financial assistance. On my journey to attend college and use my education to learn about myself and contribute to the greater good, I have faced the difficult situation of finding money to cover my tuition. My parents do not have the financial backing to provide the funds for all of my fees for college.
Attending Spelman College has been one of my lifelong dreams. I believe Spelman College mirrors the sense of dedication that has been enforced in me from a young age. I know for a fact that I will strive at Spelman College and grow to contribute significantly to the outside world. During my first year at Spelman, I have been able to join clubs and volunteer my time with organizations that I view match my soul purpose of helping others. For example, my internship with the American Sign Language club has allowed me to gain communication skills with the black deaf community to bridge the gaps between the hearing and the hard of hearing. This is especially important in today's societal climate, where police brutality is at an all-time high. It shows the perspective of the black deaf community and how they struggle with implicit biases and not fully understanding how to communicate with them.
However, with the gap between my anticipated FAFSA and actual family contribution, I will still face a financial need. Awarding me this opportunity will make an outstanding contribution to my studies at Spelman College. I also work in a nearby area to support my financial needs while in college.
During my future internships, I will spend a lot of time connecting with others to provide an objective analysis of how the health of individuals, social formations, and the environment are affected by interrelationships between humans and other species. This is a unique interest, but my study in this subject will research the discrepancies of medical practices between different cultures. These studies will bring evidence to how people of color in today's society do not receive the quality of health care due to the color of their skin. The skills I am learning from my higher-level classes, such as Chemistry and the African Diaspora of the World, are transferable to a career in Medical Anthropology, which makes me even more excited and prepared for the opportunities my future has in store for me. This excitement has led me to this scholarship application. My excitement stems from a want to constantly better myself, which allows me to remind myself that the sky is the limit. Thank you for allowing me to find a continuation in funding my dreams.
