Getting to Know Honest Abe by Kourtney - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I had the opportunity to eat dinner with any U.S. President, it would be Abraham Lincoln, no question. This is because Abraham Lincoln’s life fascinates me, I want to know the answer to questions about his assassination that only he (or John Wilkes Booth) could answer, and he has many qualities that make up a good leader that make me desire to get to know him.
First, I would love to eat dinner with Abraham Lincoln because his life and story fascinates me. Out of all of the U.S. presidents, I probably am most knowledgeable about Lincoln. I have visited Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C., read Bill O’Reilly’s book Killing Lincoln, visited the Lincoln Memorial, and more, seeking as much information on him and his life as possible. Because I have devoted time and effort into learning about him, I am intrigued by all that President Lincoln accomplished in his lifetime.
Next, dining with President Lincoln would be amazing because he could answer some of the questions that no one has answers to concerning the day of his assassination. Did the President suspect it at all? Did his wife suspect it at all? Did Lincoln die before he had the chance to change anything? The list of questions I would like to ask him goes on and on.
Last, Abraham Lincoln had many good qualities that make me want to get to know him. For instance, many that personally knew President Lincoln would say that he was honest. He also was a fabulous leader and example. He lead this country in a way that makes me proud. He was the president to win the Civil War. He was the president that ended slavery. He gave the famous Gettysburg Address. Abraham Lincoln was not only an amazing president, but also an amazing man. For these reasons and many more, I would love to eat dinner with and get to know President Abraham Lincoln.
