Life Skills by Kory - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor I would teach a life skills course. Most colleges require students to take some type of freshman seminar class, during their first year, as a way for the student to get acclamated into college life. However, in most cases, the student is not required to take a life skills course to help them with the everyday skills they will need, along with their academic skills, after graduation. I think it is very important that every student takes a life skills class in order to help them become a more well-rounded, productive citizen post graduation.
Providing life skills courses in college is very important, but is often over-looked, because many people make the assumption that life skills are common sense skills or that they will be learned gradually over time automatically. Well, this way of thinking is not necessarily a great way of thinking. For example, while I am a student I am usually provided with some type of school issued debit card to use to purchase all of my meals and snacks, but there is nothing in place to teach me how to manage my card. Usually, if funds run out, part of my tuition payment is allotted to go on the card or a parent or guardian will just re-load it with their money. Therefore when I graduate from college, I will be expecting to just be able to swipe my card whenever I want something without knowing how to manage the funds that may or may not be availabe.
Another example of why I would teach a life skills class if I were a professor is that I would be able to incorporate information that students can use in order to learn how to network. Networking is important in order for students to get jobs, to join networking groups, and to meet other people with commonalities. Receiving an education at a higher institution of learning is very important to be productive and successful in today's market, but so is receiving an education in life skills so a person can be well-rounded academically and socially.
