"When life gives you lemons, make orange juice..." by Koree - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Lessons are learned from an experience, example or observation, and imparts new knowledge or understanding. Sometimes, the most important lessons as young adults are those defining moments that positively impact behavior and thought process. For example, after a problematic journey, I was given a journal as a good luck gift for the beginning of a new and improved chapter of my life. In this journal were words of encouragement, a daily prayer and the quote, “When life gives you lemons, make orange juice and leave them wondering how you did it”.
To me, this quote means to embrace what life gives you and make the most out of it. It teaches optimism, to have an open mind and remain hopeful because your situation has the ability to change; hence lemons are not oranges. This is the most important lesson a teacher has taught me, as it allowed me to enhance my thought process which has led to impeccable improvement in my behavioral practices.
The message behind this quote encourages optimism, hard work and excellence. It teaches that while life doesn’t always go as planned, to make the best that you can out of your situation and reiterates the correlation between continuous hard work and excellence. It encourages one to prevail and succeed beyond standard.
Lessons are important because they can be transferred and applied to numerous situations during the course of one’s life. As a young adult experiencing life through trial and error, identifying in what manner one should navigate life can be challenging and often problematic. This is why it is to the utmost importance to distinguish ways to cope with life’s mishaps. This quote has taught me how to transform a negative circumstance into a positive situation by maintaining an open mind and continuing my hard work.
This is the most important lesson taught to me by a teacher as it encouraged me to improve my thought process and behavioral practices. Life for me as a teenage girl blossoming into a young woman was difficult. Due to my own mistakes, I hit a few bumps and was knocked off my course. This quote encouraged me to contain an open mind and to continue working towards excellence and improvement. It is due to the lesson learned by this quote that I am continuing my education at Bethune-Cookman University as a second year biology major with the intention of becoming a Dermatologist.
