Dinner With Mr. Lincoln by Klara - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

Having dinner with any United States president would be an amazing opportunity, but if I had to choose, our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, would be my first choice. He was in my opinion, one of the best presidents that our country has ever seen. I can't even imagine living in the United States during the Civil War, much less having one of the greatest responsibilities at the time, holding the position of president. I would ask Mr. Lincoln how he dealt with so many great expectations from the American people. Abraham Lincoln paved the way for racial freedom in our country, and never had the opportunity to see it through completely.

I would love to hear what his plans for the future of our country would have been. He accomplished so many things in his short time as president, leaving me to wonder if our country would be any different today if he had lived longer as our leader. On a side note, with the way that our language has changed in the past century and a half, it would be very interesting to listen to the differences in my daily speech compared to his. His language was much more formal than our modern day conversations. Not only would the language differences be interesting, but I would ask him about his life and how he grew up, including what it was like to live during that time. It was a very different world during his time on earth than it is now, so I would compare his world's problems to my own. In conclusion, Abraham Lincoln would be my choice because I would love to learn from his great achievements and see what his opinion of our world would be.
