Ten Years by Kirstin - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
The distance between dreams and reality is called action, my dream ever since I was a little girl was to have a career in caring for animals. After self-assessment and decision making I decided to pursue a career as a Veterinary Technician. With this decision, I created goals starting with the basics, picking a school. The next step was acquiring the finances to support my needs and schooling. Finally, when I graduate college I want to land a job offer that I will forever love. A job that will financially support me on my own. However, picking the right school for me is where the start line is drawn.
There are many programs and schools to choose from when it comes to becoming a Veterinary Technician. However, after many long discussions and back and forth communication I finally came to a decision. I’m proudly apart of the dual enrolled program through Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University. In this program, I will be working towards an Undergraduate BS Animal Science degree. With this program, I will have the opportunity to save some money on tuition. However, this will still cost me over twenty thousand dollars per term. With this, I went seeking for a job to help build up a savings account for college.
I’ve always been a very independent person and with the expenses of college being unavoidable it was time to get a job. During my senior year of high school (2019-2020 school year) I decided to graduate early so I can have the extra four months to work and build up my savings account for college. I’m happy to report it has been very successful. However, I’m not going to be able to pay for everything when needed so resorting to student loans and scholarships is a must. With loans, I will have to pay them back once out of college. Meaning, I need to land an outstanding job to not only help support myself after college but to help pay off the student loans I will be pulling out.
There is a place located in Bend, Oregon called Broken Top Veterinary Clinic and getting a job at that clinic would be a dream within itself, which is why I put it into my ten-year career plan. With jaw-dropping scenery and the power to help any animal daily is my dream and will be my dream job. Once I achieve my dream job I want to buy my first house, a new car and, to give some money back to my parents for everything they’ve done for me. My Ten Year plan will give me amazing opportunities and rocky lows.
I’m in the stepping stones of my Ten Year plan and I can’t wait to see what else it has in store for me. OSU itself holds great opportunities within itself for me, the education and new connections will impact me greatly. I want to take advantage and reach for the sky any chance given and with this essay, I hope you will help me achieve that.
