Hope for the Hopeless by Kirsten - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Hope. This is the word I would choose to describe why I wish to attend college. I want to become a registered nurse, and be able to provide hope in addition to medical care. In general, the hospital is the last place anyone wants to be. Hospitals are where ill people go to seek medical help. Sometimes these people are in life and death situations, and all they need at that point is a glimpse of hope that everything is going too be okay. As a nurse, I will be able to provide hope to patients and families by caring for them medically and emotionally. One of my career goals is to be more than just a nurse. I want to be there for my patients to rely on me when they don’t have anybody. I will work to my best of my ability to provide care and hope to every patient and family I encounter throughout my career as a registered nurse.
As a child, I was diagnosed with cancer at two years old. I had an extra-gonadal germ cell tumor that was very rare at the time, and the doctors didn’t have a reliable course of treatment. Even though they were unsure if I was going to survive, the doctors and nurses gave my family hope through this difficult time. They did the best they could to shrink and remove the tumor. This treatment was successful and I can proudly say I’ve been cancer free for sixteen years. The doctors and nurses that took care of me didn’t just treat me, they genuinely cared about my family and I. They gave us hope in hard times. I want to go to college and become a registered nurse to give other people hope. The doctors and nurses that treated me showed my family hope and compassion, so I want to share the hope my family and I received with others. Mental health is just as important as physical health, so I want to be able to nurture and care for all aspects of my patients and their families.
Through going to college, I will be able to obtain my four-year nursing degree, and become a successful registered nurse. My goal is to work at a hospital either in trauma, ICU, or the operating room after my four years at school. I want to be there for my patients through their challenges and help them recover and overcome their illnesses. I will be able to provide hope to every patient I see when I get my nursing license and finish college.
