Leading the Future by Kira - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Some believe that leadership is the ability to lead a group of people towards a common goal to eventual success. While this definition fits many circumstances, I do not believe this form of leadership is necessary for college success. My definition of leadership is the ability to lead one’s self to a high level of achievement through a personal process to success. This form of leadership is vital for every student to achieve his or her greatest potential. The benefits of this process are numerous including learning to set goals, communication skills and organization.

Achieving a college degree can be an overwhelming task for some. Learning to set goals along the way can be useful to a student. One may choose to view their education one class at a time, one project at a time or one assignment at a time. Any of these goals will provide a focus and purpose to every task that a student tackles.

Communication is key. For most, college is the first venture away from home into a more autonomous role. Whether it be in an academic setting or handling the business of everyday life, communicating concisely and clearly is important to every endeavor. Developing this ability is a crucial ingredient to personal leadership. One’s communication skill can have a major effect on the level of success of the largest or smallest of tasks.

Anyone that is thrust into a new situation with a new set of expectations must find a level of organization in their life. In personal, professional or academic life, the skill to stay organized can serve as a useful tool in keeping a focus of purpose on the tasks that one is presented with. Organization helps one accomplish the goals they set out for themselves.

This overall style of personal leadership is necessary for all college students. Developing these skills will serve each individual well in college and beyond. It will afford all the ability to succeed at his or her highest level.
