Society today is rapidly evolving and everything is moving at a remarkable pace. One of the most beneficial things someone can do to keep up with society is obtain a college degree. College degrees allow for someone to gain a wealth of knowledge in a certain field. College degrees can help someone be better off financially and grow better as a person.
A gigantic benefit of earning a college degree is the opportunity for higher-income jobs. Studies by the U.S. Bureau of Labor have revealed that people with bachelor's degrees earn more than 68% more than people who only have high school diplomas. Having something like a bachelor's degree will let someone stand out against the competition and give someone more leverage when it comes to negotiating salaries and benefits in today's competitive job market. Having a high income allows people to better reach life-long goals like owning a home, starting a family, and or being able to retire.
Before entering the workforce, college degrees can give people networking opportunities. By talking with professors or alumni, doors can be opened for things like internships or mentorship which will greatly benefit someone entering the workforce. Career fairs can also expose people to different career paths and different industries. Many college courses also have students collaborating with their peers preparing them for workplace environments and allowing them to develop good communication and problem-solving skills, which are all essential to not only being successful in the workforce but also in day-to-day life. Experiences and interactions help ensure that graduates will enter the workforce with the proper skills they need to be successful in the workplace.
College degrees provide many financial and career benefits but just as importantly they provide personal and communal growth as well. Through obtaining a college degree and going onto a campus every day college students are exposed to all kinds of people and ideologies that might differ from their own. Being exposed to something different allows people to develop better empathy for others and allows people to better understand their own beliefs. Interactions with people from different backgrounds make people more adaptable and innovative in both their personal and professional lives. People who have interacted with all different types of people are more likely to be willing to reach out to others and attempt to foster community wherever they go. The social capital that college degrees provide is just as important as the financial benefits.
College degrees provide invaluable benefits that will forever change the course of someone's life. From financial benefits like having a higher income or personal benefits like better understanding one’s self, the value of a college degree is very multifaceted. College degrees remain one of the best ways for someone to secure a bright future for themselves.
