No Problem To Big by kimberly - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

To answer this question effectively I have to tell you a little bit about myself first. I am a mother of three children who, when I started back to school this semester, hadn’t seen the inside of a college classroom or text book in almost twenty years. That in itself was a very large academic challenge. Then there was also making time to study and do my school work and still spend time with my family, pay the bills, and all the other things that I need to keep up with in my life.
The most difficult problem for me was the fact that it had been so long since I had been in school. First, I had to have the courage to walk into the building realizing that I may not have the knowledge needed to succeed in the classes I was taking. I took it one step at a time; you can’t fix a problem until you know what it is. I figured out fairly quickly that my math class was the one I was going to have the most problems in. So, I worked backwards. The class started several chapters into the book. I started on the first chapter in order to review what I needed to learn. I worked through the book from the beginning while also doing the work assigned by the teacher. Within a few weeks I was caught up and understood what the teacher was teaching. I didn’t have any issues with missing knowledge in my other classes. We were all learning new things at the same time, not building on a knowledge base we should have already had like in math.
The second thing I had a hard time with was making time for studying in my already busy life. Prioritize! Prioritize! Prioritize! You can’t get everything done all at once so you have to make time. Yes, you got an assignment today but its not due for a week. Spend an hour on it, then go spend time on other things you need to do. If you spend an hour on it everyday you will have it done in time. If it something more difficult then you spend more time on it. You just have to learn to organize your time in a way so the things that need to be done first are the ones you do first. It takes time to figure that out though. It is pretty rough at first trying to balance everything in life and school but its possible.
Even though I am a lot older than your average student I believe anyone can meet their goals if they just stick to it. I believe any challenge put in front of you just makes meeting your goals sweeter in the end. Fight for what you want and you will get it. Even if you are a 36 year old non-traditional student. Work hard and conquer your goals.
