"The Past is Key" by Kimberleigh - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
"Citizenship is... a sense of belonging to a community for which one bears some responsibility. In a word, citizenship implies public-spiritedness, which is akin to patriotism and has to be cultivated."- Walter Berns
Civics is the study of the rights and duties of citizenship. Though it touches base on those ideas, it's more in my definition an examination in understanding the way citizens are engaged in government activity. It is taking the knowledge of a U.S. citizen and availing yourself within the boundaries of workmanship; while possessing the desire to excommunicate yourself from isolation.
Throughout the course, I have seen vast opportunities that have allowed me to create a self-reliable and responsible figure. While you learn about civic duties and responsibility it is connected with decisions faced on the daily encounter. As the course has taught me about these duties, I have come to take knowledge of student responsibility. In school, I currently participate in NHS and BETA club. With the acceptance to such rigorous and challenging responsibilities, I have linked civics into impact. Just as we have been given duties such as: obeying the laws, paying taxes, serving on a jury: these allow me to handle my duties on a professional level.
The knowledge and power of understanding your rights provide insight on the everyday encounter. It is one thing to know your rights and another to watch them in motion. We as citizens all are obligated to human rights, no person no matter the skin color or race shall be denied of access to these rights. The significance of knowing your rights lets you know how far you can overstep government boundaries. Suppose you didn't know your rights as an individual, and you are noted as guilty against self- containment?
While knowing our rights are superior, the study of Civics has given, me further mastery of self. I have grown to become outspoken and outgoing as a young woman. I have comprehended qualities such as leadership and hardworking. The opportunity for debate has strongly weighed as a challenge. Civic has allowed the burden of acceptance to the outcome as lighter. Being faced with daily encounters choosing the best decision is essential. These characteristics and attributes influence my choices and prepare me to become a successful young adult. With the ability to create a figure worthy of citizenship and self-obedience is a goal Civics strongly has accomplished.
Civics is accompanied with learning and valued in my view of success and building character. Being able to give yourself the assurance of creating a brighter and noble character through the obedience of civil government, is the real challenge we as humans live up to with powerful expectations. Not only is Civics human interaction in government, it is also an appendage to History. History is the term that has undermined the human race since the advancement of the time. You cannot change the past but you can learn and develop the present and the future. It is most certainly up to you and how you view the past.
