My Future Plans by Kiersten - June 2023 Scholarship Essay
I have planned to pursue a career in the medical field since I was young. My first encounter with a nurse that I can recall was getting a shot when I was four years old. The nurse was gentle, kind, and reassured me that everything would okay even though I was nervous. I too, want to be able to pursue a noble profession that allows me to care and provide medical attention to the public. I believe that nurses, along with doctors can shape a community and help a society to grow. Healthcare is the most basic and fundamental human right and my goal is to become a nurse so I can work to make sure no one is denied access to the healthcare they need and deserve. I have decided to specialize in the care of babies (neonatal care).
To begin my path to success, my first step is to graduate in the top of my class and maintain a high GPA. As I have stated before, I plan to become a neonatal nurse so my first step is to become a registered nurse. I have plans to attend Francis Marion University or Lander University and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After completing an accredited nursing program, I will be required to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) before beginning work as a registered nurse. Then I must gain experience working with children and infants prior to being hired by either working in a hospital’s nursery or undertaking an on-the-job training program. I will also gain a pediatric nursing certification through the National Certification Corporation (NCC) to better my chances at being hired. Finally, I will ensure I am advanced by undertaking a master’s degree via online learning, allowing me to continue gaining work experience while pursuing my degree.
Outside of school, I have used my skills in communication and interpersonal interactions in volunteering at Helping Hands Clinic out of Mullins, South Carolina. I also intend to gain some experience by volunteering at a local hospital and job shadowing nurses. I believe this will further my knowledge and understanding in the subject. My personal experiences and attributes have led me to believe that I would be well suited to a career in Nursing and all that it entails. Furthermore, I look forward to expanding my knowledge at a top university, and preparing for an eventual career within the health sector and the possibility of further training as I know that gaining a degree is only the first step.
My education will help me reach my goals because I will have gained the knowledge I will have needed to become a neonatal nurse. All my hard work and studying will pay off in the end. My education is the most important thing in my life right now and I want the best for myself.
In ten years, I see myself owning my own home and car. I will be working for a hospital in SC or NC. I see myself graduated from graduate school and making a name for myself. I see myself building a foundation for my family and living out my dream as a nurse. I never want to see my family have to struggle. I want to be married and have kids of my own and be a role model for them.
I know this is the true path to success for me. I want to have a positive impact on society and the world by helping ill babies live and grow to up to become productive citizens. I know my legacy will live on through the babies I nurtured and the lives I’ve touched throughout my work. I want to get this degree to gain job security and make lasting connections.
