The Book That Made Me Read by Kiara - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

As a school student, we all have to read books for certain classes. I am one of the students that do not like to read. It just never really appealed to me, and I never wanted to do it. One day in class, I received a book and was told we were going to read it and have quizzes and cirlces about the book. My teacher told me the book was very good. But then again, plenty of my teaches said the same thing. I thought this was another attempt to get me to read the book. I examined the cover and read the title. "The Pencil Test". I was thinking what in the world have I gotten myself into. So I unwillingly began to follow along while to teacher was reading the book to the class. After the first chapter was over, I was hooked. This was completely surprising for me. I never found a book to be so interesting to me. Let alone,  a book that I actually wanted to read. The Pencil Test is about race, a normal Caucasion girl had the life of her dreams and it all came to a hault when she had to move to a predominately African American town. She was put to the test and ended up liking the African American race better than her own. That is just the jist of it and it is the best book I have ever read. I ended up telling my teacher that I really enjoyed the book and I thanked for having the class read it. Ever since then, I have not read another book on my own, but the ones I had to read for school do not even compare to this book. The reason this book is the best I have aver read is because it caught my attention and I actually wanted to read it. The Pencil Test made me think about the world and how people view things, and it also helped me understand the stereotypes that were given to Caucasion and African Americans. I am really glad I had the chance to read that book.
