The Dinner with Silent Cal by Kiara - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

I have been fascinated with the Roaring 20’s since I learned about it in history class. During this time in America we really hit a turning point in our history from the polite and sophisticated way of living to the wild, crazy and overzealous spending Americans were experiencing. To have learned from books on how America was governed during the 20’s was interesting. In school they broke down the president’s way of conducting the nation they saw best fit for the people and overall well being of the country at the time they were in office. Yet, to hear it from the man himself on how he governed our great nation would be even better. Having him explain what his thought process was during many of his legislative actions he carried out while in the white house would be a great conversation to converse between the both of us over dinner. To me Coolidge was more than a president but a man that held true to his morals and conducted the country the way he saw fit for everyone.
I would also like to have dinner with him because to get his viewpoints on how America has evolved from when he was in office would be so intriguing. I say this because him as a president will have many things to say that can give me a different view on the job of a president because he has been in that position before compared to a citizen like me that just sees what is put on the media and judges from that. Even after his presidency when the stock market crashed; Coolidge recognized that he bore responsibility for the crash because as much as he fixed some of the problems, he claims that during his presidency he avoided the big problems the country faced. I do not fault him for this and would love to ask him how it must have felt to owning up to his mistakes and being honest about what he did during his presidency. Not many presidents that I have so far lived through honestly do an action unless they are caught and brought to the public’s attention with evidence provided of course. So, to have him as company for dinner would be a true honor and very inspiring for me. Also just talking with him would be humorous and interesting due to his English being better than mine since the English language has evolved throughout the years.
