A different perspective by Kiara - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

The most important thing that I learned from a teacher was to ask yourself "what problems do I want to solve" instead of asking "what do I want to be when I grow up". The questions have the same purpose, but they offer a different outlook of your future path. This teacher told the class that when we ask what we want to be, we are really just asking ourselves who do we want to work for. We are also asking ourselves to commit to this one job. If we ask ourselves what problems we want to solve, we will be looking into a field of careers, not just one.

This tactic is much more effective because it makes you think about today as well as your future because you have to work towards solving problems. When you think about what you want to be when you "grow up", you won't think about what it takes to get to there as much as you would when it's getting close to time to make the final decision. The more you do now, the less you have to do later so making yourself start early is the best choice. When you think about the big problem you are trying to solve, you are thinking about how you can improve the world, country, city, school system, etc. You aren't thinking about the person or company you want to work for, you are thinking about working for the citizens. You want to know how you can serve them in a way beneficial to them.
