My Opportunity to Get into College by Kiah - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
Getting accepted into college is an initiation rite in itself. It shows that those 13 years of schooling have paid off. It also marks a step into adulthood. Mom and Dad won’t be in your dorm to wake you up for school. You are independent. The college life could mean sleepless nights, small meals, over studying, or under studying. I am prepared for it all. Although college means finally being on my own after 18 years of living with my mom, the part of the college experience I will be most thankful for is having the opportunity to actually being able to go to college.
I knew since I was in middle school, that I wanted to go to college. I discovered that when I went to a college fair for AVID in the 6th grade. The first college to approach me was Winston-Salem State University. As they talked to me about their campus and college life, I was all ears. That moment I knew college was going to be my main goal. Being accepted one day would make me thankful indefinitely.
Another reason why I would be thankful is because neither one of my parents went to college. Being accepted into a university of my choosing, would make them both so proud of me. They never exactly pushed the idea of me going to college; However, I told them that I am going to work as hard as I can to make sure I make it there. Ever since, they have been supporting my decision to try to make it there. The day I get the acceptance letter that says “You have been accepted into…”, will be the day I am most gracious.
I feel the hardest job for an Admissions counselor is picking who they will accept or will not accept for their University. There could be so many applicants with amazing grades, awards, and accomplishments. My application could be among many of those who are trying to get the same spot as me. Being picked means that they found me worthy enough to attend their college. I would have no choice but to be thankful. Not only have they allowed me to have the college experience but they saw potential in me that could have been among other potentially amazing applicants.
All in all, the part of the college experience I would be most thankful for is actually being able to go to college. Not many can get into college due to many factors such as grades, financial issues, family, etc. It’s been a dream of mine to go to college. I would be thankful being able to have the opportunity to go. It would make my mom and dad very proud. That would make me feel so grateful that I was able to make them proud of me.
