Hard Work Pays Off by Ki'Anna - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

There are many teachers that love their jobs because they try their best to teach their students life lessons. By doing so, they feel as if they’ve truly accomplished their job as a teacher. Also, they’ve helped the student to pursue life at a different angle and have given them a better chance to succeed. I had an english teacher that tried her hardest to prepare us for life after high school when I was in my sophomore year, and her name was Ms. Johnson.
In Ms. Johnson’s class, I was one of the few sophomores in her advanced English Language course which is taken by juniors. On the first day of school, she promised to work us hard and to never slack off. This is the normal speech that everybody hears on the first day of school, but everybody knows that at the end of the year, things get easier. However, in Ms. Johnson’s case, she kept to her word. She rarely gave second chances and extra credit work, but it taught everyone to focus more on the quality of their assignments. She also stacked tons of work on us at a time, and it helped us to learn how to manage our time for our coursework. One day, after a hard mid-term exam and project, I asked Ms. Johnson why she gave everyone such a hard time in her English class. She explained how she strived every day to make sure that it’s known that she’s the hardest teacher on campus. That way, she’s given the cream of the crop, and she can personally prepare us for what it will be like in college. “Everything I do is because I want all of you to buckle down and be prepared for what those professors will throw at you. And since I have a few sophomores, I have to be even harder so that you all will mature faster,” she said. After my sophomore year in high school, I was able to stroll through my last year of english as a junior with ease. Because of this, my teacher allowed me to help any struggling classmates in my free time.
In conclusion, teachers that enjoy teaching life lessons, like Ms. Johnson, are a very healthy and helpful part of society. They are known to help students not only get a great education, but to learn how to handle life in different situations. In Ms. Johnson’s case, the most important lesson that she saw to teach was to work hard now so that it will pay off later once we got to college. That way, great habits are already set in place for college courses by the way that she taught us to work hard in high school.
