My Biggest Challenge by khatira - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
In my life, the biggest challenge I have faced yet is leaving my country. There was no other choice other than leaving the country with my family. I thought leaving the country might be an end to my problems, but it was just the start.
All the corruption in the government, wars, racism between its own people, no education, and danger to our life are reasons for taking this step. Leaving all my childhood memories, my home, my relatives, and all the people I love is very hard. Leaving all that behind, we came to the United States. Coming here and not being familiar with the people, language, place, rules, the system, and school were the challenges to overcome as soon as possible. For learning the language, I would study more vocabulary at home and try to speak to English speakers in my classes. First, starting school I wanted to be with Farsi speakers, but it didn’t help my language at all, so I try to be with people who I can practice my English with. It was very hard because students in my classes they only had to learn the lesson, but I had to learn the lesson and its translation in my language.
The second semester of my freshman year was rough for me and I got two “B”s in two of my classes. It made me try harder and study more to be prepared for the next year because I didn’t have the advantage of knowing the language. But, I could not give up and stay in ELD classes for my sophomore year too. Fortunately, I got into English 1/2C and no beginning classes. But, it wasn’t enough for me, I had to practice my essay writing skills. So, I took the test for Grossmont college English classes, which were thought in school. I was in that class for the second semester of sophomore year and I learned a lot. I had to make up the credit for the first semester of freshman year because I came to the US my second semester of freshman year. I took summer schools to make up the credit for my important classes. All my 3 years in high school, I took all 7 periods.
All, these little problems started by the one challenge, but I am glad I overcome those and never gave up. I tried my best to overcome those obstacles and I admit it was very hard. It meant no hanging out with my friends, no fun outside of school, and studying all the time. I did all this because it was worth it.
