Principle and Care for Humanity by Khadim - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

Driven by a desire to aid humanity and high moral standards at the two qualities a Nobel recipient should posses. Scientists and researchers around the world are creating information that will move our abilities forward as a race. All of their subject matters and approaches are add value to our lives in some way. The greatest undertaking, however, must be driven by the desire to help people and life. One such example is Tasuku Honjo, a 2018 Nobel in medicine recipient, who helped the world better understand the process of cell death. This break in understanding may lead to the most effective and safe disease treatments of our lifetime, but where there is opportunity there can also be abuse of these technologies. It is important then that a Nobel recipient also be a person of high moral character. They may need to decide how their discovery both should and should not be applied.

I one read an article that explained how Albert Einstein struggled to share his famous mass energy equivalence concept (E= mc2) because he knew that his theory could be used to make weapons and cause large scale harm. This is a dilemma that many researchers may face and in ordered to be considered worthy of the greatest award and recognition, the Nobel, they should demonstrate high standards of electing right over wrong.
