There is some basic necessary information out there that is not so basic. As adults, we are expected to know how to write checks and resumes, build and maintain credit scores, do taxes, and other necessary tasks. This is information that should be taught. Some people are fortunate to have adults in their lives to teach and explain things like this, but others are less fortunate and have no idea how to do tasks like this.

This would be a class that would help every student regardless of their future plans.

I am aware that some schools offer classes such as “Personal Finance,” but when I took that class we focused mostly on entrepreneurship. I did not find that class necessarily useful. I am confident that it would be beneficial to make a class that covers those necessary tasks mandatory for every student across the country.

In this class, every task taught should be interactive. That way everyone has hands-on experience with what is being taught, so that it will not be foreign in the future. I believe that this class should be required in the Junior or Senior year of high school, so that it is closer to a relevant time; this would hopefully lead the student to be more interested in learning these tasks. Being a Freshman or Sophomore, this information may seem pointless to the students, so it would not be as beneficial to require it either of those years. The curriculum would include a descriptive lesson followed by scenarios and hands-on activities. For example, the instructor would provide a financial situation and the students would have to respond how they would in real life.

To add, the instructor should be someone who knows what they are teaching; not someone who is teaching straight from a book.

Regardless of what one's future holds, this would be the most beneficial class. Every person would gain an advantage from this knowledge.
