Positive Impact on Education by Kevin - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Recently, I was asked to make a list of the top ten people I admire. If you knew us personally, you might be surprised that my brother made the top of my list. Growing up, the age difference of almost 7 years, didn’t help when it came to us having much in common. However, I look up to my older brother and I am proud of his accomplishments. My parents say that I took my first steps, rushing into his outstretched arms.
My brother is the first male on my mom’s side of the family to attend and graduate college. He was also offered a scholarship to attend graduate school. He now works and lives in North Carolina. Like my brother, I am determined and diligent when it comes to school, so hopefully my grades will help with scholarships. I am also a track and field athlete. I started last season with an injury and it has made me realize that I can’t depend solely on athleticism.
I come from a legacy of parents who were the first in their families to attend college. I come from a grandmother who, as a young mother, was unable to attend college. She worked at her job for over 48 years, until she passed away this past July. She instilled in my brother and me the importance of education and pursuing a career we actually enjoyed and working hard to achieve our goals. It will be hard walking across the stage in May and not hearing her cheering and yelling my name, but I know that she would be proud.
There are a few people that have had a positive impact on my education, but if I had to choose one, it would be my brother. He continues to set and attain his goals and emulates excellence. While I’d like to follow in my brother’s footsteps by attending college, I don’t want to graduate with an excessive amount of student loan debt. Winning this scholarship will start me on the right track of pursing my goal of attending and graduating college with as minimal debt as possible. By investing in me, you are funding hopes, dreams, legacy and an extraordinary future.
