The importance of Discipline by Kevin - January 2022 Scholarship Essay
Do you remember growing up and wanting that midnight snack or even that "last" game for the night? My parents do! Well, I am here to tell you that they were probably right in not letting me/you do so. However, don't let that bug you though, they probably had a point. I am here to explain why that urge to play those last few video games or that bite to eat can benefit you in the long run. The answer to your curiosities is the word "discipline".
The word discipline brings distaste to others and joy to some, but discipline isn't such a drag as people make it out to be. It is a powerful ability that can change your life for the better no matter how minuscule or huge the action of discipline is. For example, discipline can range from doing something as small as making your bed every day when you wake up in the morning. Jordan Peterson, a world-renowned psychologist famously said " in order to organize your mind you need to clean your room." This is highly important due to the unfortunate setbacks and stressors that striving towards success can present.
Even though to some it might be a drag, I am here to say it changed my life for the better. 2021 was one of the hardest years of my academic school career, not because the homework was hard, but because unfortunately, my school was forced to do virtual learning because of COVID-19 and hazards at the schools.
Therefore, I had no access to in-person learning which is how I personally learn. This set me back because my biggest weakness of not being able to teach myself and keep up with online work was exposed.
However, one day I stumbled upon a man named Jordan Peterson that I quoted previously. He talked about the keys to success and a few of them included: organizing your mind, having good habits, and having good discipline. The reason I mention this is because to achieve your goals you need to be able to consistently work on them. My goal is to finish my senior year of high school with good grades and to get accepted to a college. In order to do those things, I had to dedicate myself to finishing my assignments on time and making a schedule of how much work needed to be done during the week. This was hard for me because I have always been used to in-person learning and I didn't know how to not rely on my teacher to be able to explain it to me face to face.
Overall, discipline played a huge role in my academic success. To put it into layman's terms, the ability to be able to be on task and execute without hesitation or procrastination is the key to success in the long-term and short-term depending on what your goals are. Therefore, my efforts to put that last game or playtime aside to focus on my grades and education helped me to get A's on my report card at the end of the semester.
