College to high school by Kevin - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

During college, I thought I would be studying to do science research afterwards, but little did I know I was studying to teach high school science. My degree was not one of education in order to teach high school, but one of biology with a chemistry minor to work in a lab.

Then Dr. Lea Hadden entered my life. He was a biology professor at Wingate College, as it was then, and he began to teach me about being an educator. I did not know it then, but I would later become a high school science teacher – fifteen years teaching biology and chemistry.

Dr. Hadden was a family man. He prayed with me while I was in college and also taught be about being a man and a husband. He was a great professor that brought real relationships into his teaching style. To me, that is what made the biggest difference in how I learned to teach high school. I came to understand that teaching, regardless the level, is about respect and relationship. Of course you have to know your content, but students want to know you work at knowing them, too.

In conclusion, Dr. Hadden was consistent in how he taught, dealt with students and his family and led by example.
