Eating Dinner with Dwight Eisenhower by Kevin - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
President Eisenhower is one of the most important Presidents in American history. He created the Highway system that is now crucial to our nation's economy, he expanded social security and defended labor laws. He was also Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War Two, coordinating efforts between the big personalities that so often surrounded him, namely Churchill, De Gaulle, Patton, Montgomery, and many others who couldn't help but try and standout as the greatest of their time.
Eisenhower was a team player, a man who believed in the importance of working together and moderation. He did not re-segregate the military and even deployed the National Guard when the rights of African-Americans in the south were being threatened by state governments.
This is not to say he was the perfect man, during his time he supported the overthrow of Iran's democratically elected government, as well as a number of other nations. He did little to stop the rampant McCarthyism that had gripped the nation, and even helped to inflame the Red Scare in America for his own political ends.
This is what makes him such an interesting man, I would want to know how he thought, what led him to make the decisions that he did, the good and the bad. Out of all the Presidents, I feel like he's probably the most likely to give me some honest answers.
