Describe an Academically Challenging Situation You've Encountered, and How You Overcame It by Kennidi - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

Walt Disney said, “All our dreams can come true…if we have the courage to pursue them.” Courage is not something I was born with, it’s what I’ve LEARNED through tough times. Being the other half of a twin who excelled in academics was very challenging because we were always being compared to each other. I was not as strong academically and faced challenges over the years; yet with outside help, I have earned high grades. This scholarship opportunity will allow me to achieve my goals of becoming a Broadcast Journalist, no matter what obstacles I have to overcome.
Overcoming obstacles is part of our life long journey. I’ve conquered many obstacles in my life but the one that was most challenging was being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. My parents and I noticed it took me longer to catch on to certain concepts or even focus on the matter at hand. Spelling was difficult for me because it took me a while to write down just a few words and there were several spelling rules to memorize. Thankfully, they were patient and did not allow me to succumb to the disorder.
My parents had me tested for learning disabilities and I worked with a National Institute for Learning Development therapist to develop skills for independent learning. Though I was very young, I knew I wanted more out of life even if that meant I had to work a little harder. I continued to challenge myself not only academically but also in extracurricular activities. I started dancing at the age of four. Dancing has been a healthy outlet for me and allowed me to develop self-confidence. When I felt low and could not find the words to express myself; I did it through dance.
While in high school, I have also received training in acting from my performing arts high school. Public speaking has always come naturally to me and I have perfected the craft of improvisation. I found a way to branch my love of public speaking into my passion for Broadcast Journalism. English was once a subject I struggled with; however I have grown to love it over the years. With a degree in Broadcast Journalism I can use my TV platform to serve as a positive role model to show the youth that you can overcome obstacles.
While a college degree is one of my goals, I have an obstacle to overcome before that goal can be realized. I am a twin and we will both be starting college this Fall. Being a twin presents some unique challenges because all costs are doubled, such as tuition, and a host of other college costs. So this is why I’m applying for scholarships to make college education more affordable. Thank you to the Varsity Tutors for sponsoring this scholarship to help youth with their monetary needs for college.
