The rainbow bridge at 2:00 a.m. by Kennedy - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Two years ago my dog, Kloe, was discovered to have a golf ball size bladder stone blocking her urinary tract. That dreadful day, she had been straining for over 8 hours to simply urinate and eventually she started passing blood. We rushed her to the emergency vet at midnight and were told that they could surgically remove it, however, it was very expensive and they couldn’t guarantee her survival nor the success of the surgery. We simply didn’t have the money to pay for the surgery not knowing if she would even survive in her current fragile state. Kloe came over and laid in my mom’s lap, thanking her for the wonderful life she had been given. Sadly, we knew we had to make the hardest choice animal owners ever have to make. We chose to put our Kloe down and to not live in pain.
That traumatic night is when I realized that I don’t ever want a pet owner to go through the same thing with their animals. Like every kid at some time in their life, I always wanted to be a vet. As Kloe passed away in our arms at 2:00 a.m. and crossed the rainbow bridge outside of their facility in a beautiful gated area, I knew immediately that I would become a vet. Since then, I’ve made it my goal to not only become a small animal vet, but open my own veterinary clinic and make it affordable to all pet families. To reach this goal I have decided to go to Tartleton State University and major in their animal science pre-vet program.
