Black Women in HealthCare by Kennedi - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
My next big educational goal is to attend college for pre-nursing so I can become a neonatal nurse. Becoming a neonatal nurse as a Black woman holds profound significance, it is my dream and passion to help others especially when those others are our future leader. This career path not only allows me to provide critical care to the most vulnerable patients but also addresses systemic disparities in healthcare. By stepping into this role, I can make a lasting impact on the health outcomes of newborns and their families, particularly in underserved communities.
Historically, Black women have faced significant barriers in healthcare, both as patients and professionals. By becoming a neonatal nurse, I contribute to changing this narrative. Representation matters immensely in healthcare; when patients see healthcare providers who look like them, it can build trust and improve communication. This is particularly crucial in neonatal care, where the health and well-being of infants are directly tied to the support and confidence of their parents. My presence can provide comfort and assurance to families who might otherwise feel marginalized or misunderstood within the healthcare system.
Moreover, as a neonatal nurse, I have the opportunity to advocate for systemic changes from within. I can work to ensure that all patients receive equitable care, regardless of their background. This advocacy can take many forms, from pushing for policy changes to addressing implicit biases within your workplace. By combining your professional skills with your unique perspective, you can help create a more inclusive and just healthcare environment, ultimately improving outcomes for all patients.
