Life is an Obstacle by Kennedi - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
School, it comes with many obstacles you have to overcome to become successful later on. You may struggle in the beginning but soon enough you will come out of the situation with a successful ending. A time where I had to tackle an academic obstacle was when I struggled a lot with my math classes in middle school and I came into high school worried that I wouldn’t be able to do well in any of my math based classes.
It was the first day of high school and I saw I got put into Algebra 1. I was nervous because I knew that I have taken that class before and I didn’t do too well in it. I got so frustrated the first time I took it so I just stopped trying (a big mistake). I started my first day of the class ready to go, had my note pages ready, pencil ready and my mind ready to focus on doing well. I realized that I got a new teacher and he didn’t really know how to teach or even how to control the class. I was beyond nervous. I thought that I didn’t have all of the right tools to help me succeed. I still tried to have a positive mindset and I realized that I have to try 10 times harder to pass this class. I focused in class, did my work and rarely talked. If I did talk it was to ask for math help. I wanted to pass that class. I was still struggling a lot because the people in my class were very disruptive and the teacher spent most of his time trying to calm the class down to he could teach. The hour class period was 90% him trying to control the class room and 10% actually learning math. It was horrific.
I was beginning to search for different options of what I could do to try to get extra help. I went to my counselor to try to get some advice and I discovered many available opportunities at my school like after school math help, and going to different math teachers around the school. I began going in before school and after school to get extra math support and I started to see hard work paying off, my grade was an A! I was so happy and excited that I was finally starting to understand math.
At the end of the year, I ended the class with an A. This was an extremely proud moment for me knowing that I struggled a lot with the class before. I was faced with an obstacle, and I overcame it successfully. Although there were many tough times that I did have to get through while going through the obstacle I still came out successful. I am currently a junior in high school and I still continue to get the extra help I need in all my math classes. I have passed all my math base classes with a B or higher. This is a major accomplishment for me.
From this experience, I learned that no matter what you are faced with whether it be school or real life situations, always try to look at the different ways you can overcome them. If you have worked hard, eventually everything will work out in the end. Hard work almost always pays off in the end. Your failure can teach you a lesson in the future, never look at failure as a bad thing. Look at it as an opportunity to better yourself.
